There are different forms of basketry, pick up the type in which you are interested the most. Next step is to get hold of the basic tools such as scissors, awl, clamps, measuring tape, water bucket, and knife. You also need to get a complete list of supplies or weaving kit from the craft center and get them from any shop, which has basketry supplies. Then search for a quiet place at your home where you can practice weaving without disturbance.

There are four basic techniques of basket construction. First and foremost you have the coiled construction. In this type, a bunch of strands is stitched in a spiral round or oval shape along with a thin and flexible material. You can then add many types of added embellishments like imbrications to enhance the look of your coiled basket. The second type of construction is the twined construction where two or more than two bendable materials are used to surround a base material. This technique is also known as pairing or waling depending upon the number of weavers used.

Thirdly we have woven baskets with rigid spokes and flexible wefts that are woven in and around the spokes. Elements used in this type of basketry are round or flat or can be from a wide range of materials. Lastly we have the plaited baskets, which involves weaving of similar materials at right angles in horizontal, diagonal or vertical orientations. The plaiting can be closed or checker work.

You can also go for different types of basket lessons like Adirondack Pack basket style, miniature baskets, woven cradles, Moses baskets, baby baskets etc. Every region has its own type of baskets exclusive to it. There are a variety of options available in terms of types and looks of baskets. You can search the Internet for the various options and the places where these basketry lessons are provided.

Read the instructions manual provided to you during your classes and surf the net for new and free patterns for basket weaving.
